The first 20 miles are the most tedious and should be done at low speed on 4WD roads. After 20 miles, it's all road.
Two-wheel drive is recommended. It's tough to get anyone to come to these primitive campgrounds during the rainy months.
Why? Because the high country has an old adage that if there's any hiking to be done during a storm, you'd better do it before or after dark. Fortunately, the weather turns dryer during late fall and winter, and hiking and cross-country skiing are still possible here in January.
